PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The bridge on the Great Belt strait, Denmark, is one of the biggest bridges ever built: the 1624 meters long main spam puts it on the world’s second place. Thanks to a total length of almost 7 kilometres offshore, the Danish bridge is one of today’s longest ones. This engineering work, one of the most daring in the world, represents the link between Zealand island, where the capital city Copenhagen is located, and Funen island.

The Storebaelt Bridge consists of two parts: the West Bridge and the East Bridge. The whole system’s most complex element is the second one, which is 6,8 kilometres long, it’s entirely made of steel and it consists of a suspension bridge above the waterway, with three spans (at respectively 535, 1624 and 535 meters) and of two access viaducts with traditional 193 high spans. 

The suspension bridge lies on multidirectional spherical hinges situated at the “anchor blocks”: the cross movement is controlled by the “shock transmitters”. These are used to limit the bridge’s longitudinal oscillations caused by the wind or by the normal operating loads, in order to reduce the effects produced both by traffic and wind on the joints and the suspension cables.

PERFORMED WORKS

Implementation of the civil works for the reinforced concrete structures called “saddle house” of the anchor blocks in the East Bridge construction.
